Deep Play Box Focus

At a press conference during the FedEx final, Scottie Scheffler said this about playing with Tiger Woods five years ago:

“I can’t tell you the look on his face when we got to the first green, and I look over, and this guy is just locked in, and I was taken aback. I was like ‘holy smokes.’ Then we got to the second hole, and he had this chip shot and he looked at it like it was an up-and-down to win the tournament. I’m like, this is incredible. I’ve never seen anything like this before in my life.”

“That was something that I just thought about for a long time. I felt like a change I needed to make was bringing that same intensity to each round and each shot.”

This is what we would call a deep and engaged Play Box focus. You want to give every shot your full attention, engagement, purpose, and respect. You are so deep into the swing, stroke, shot, and target that nothing else exists.

>> In practice, don’t hit a shot unless you are fully “there” and have a purpose.
>> How many shots in a row – switch clubs and target between each shot – can you hit and be 100% engaged with your focus to the finish?
>> Before stepping into a shot or a putt, find a trigger that makes you be fully engaged. It could be a certain look at the target, feeling your feet walking into the shot, an exhale, a feeling of excitement in your heart, etc…

You know you are not fully “there” if you do any of these things as you step into the shot:

>> You are talking to others
>> You are still not clear on your decision
>> Your eyes are darting left and right
>> Your mind is still in a thinking mode

We find it to be a very untrained skill for most players, Remember, what you practice you get good at! You can master this skill no matter what your handicap level is.

Productive Memory Box and Self-Talk

Tommy Fleetwood went 163 PGA Tour events before he finally won the FedEx Cup final. He has been close to winning so many times. If you, as a player, don’t manage the Memory Box and Self-Talk you might really lose your confidence and trust in your game. Tommy has intentionally chosen to be his own best friend.

A few of his quotes say it all:

Following one of his near-misses: “We just go again.”

“Hit every shot to the best of your ability and then figure it out afterward.” “That gives me the clarity.”

“I always try to find the positives.” “I’ll try to think the right way, speak the right way, and do the right things. It just shows if you keep doing that, at some point it’s going to happen for you.”

“I’ve been a PGA Tour winner for a long time.” “It’s just always been in my mind.”

>> What is your best mindset, reactions, and self-talk when things are not going your way?
>> How do you best react to shots you don’t like?
>> Do you just close the door and move on? Do you comment what can be better about your process? Do you jog a few steps to get the tension out of your body?
>> How do you best evaluate your rounds?
>> Do you recognize what still went well? Do you clarify the most important learning and how to take action on it?
>> How do you know you have done your best for every shot?
>> What self-talk makes you feel like your own best friend?

Junior54 Start

This Junior54 Start remote training will give juniors an introduction to the non-technical skills. They will discover what is best to do before, during, and after a shot. They will also learn to be aware of what makes them uniquely great as a player.

It’s a great starting point for juniors and can be followed up with either the full 12-session Junior54 remote course for more in-depth content and exercises or In-Person Coaching sessions with VISION54 coaches … or both!
