Winning, as you know, is not under your control. Of course, the better your skills are for managing all the things under your control, your probability of being successful increases. Your performance over time has growth spurts, dips, and standing still on a plateau. The reasons can be Physical, Technical, Mental, Emotional, Social, or your intrinsic motivation – what we call your “Spirit of the Game.” How you perform is and always will be variable.

Many golf majors have been played recently, along with big sporting events like the Women’s World Cup in soccer, and World Championships in swimming and track and field. The emphasis in all of them is on outcome and medals. It’s so inspiring to watch world-class athletes in any sport. It’s our experience that nurturing your “Spirit of the Game” does not always get enough attention. For us, it’s the bedrock of enjoying competition. It’s the foundation of sustainability in performance. >> What is it that you love about golf for the sake of playing the game?

There is a word – autotelic – from the Greek words “auto” (self) + “telos” (end) – an Autotelic is “someone or something that has a purpose in, and not apart from, itself.” It doesn’t mean it’s always blissful playing, but it does mean there is something to it, no matter how you perform.

The Swedish star swimmer, Sarah Sjöström beat Michael Phelps’ record in the amount of medals won in World Championships this summer. The new record is 21! When asked about setting goals she said, “Medals put expectations on me. My focus is to train to swim faster instead.” She is smart enough to put her focus on what’s under her control.

Rachel Heck, Stanford’s outstanding player, said this during the US Women’s Amateur, “It’s been a really hard year, hard year and a half. So just to feel like myself again and to feel healthy – I mean, I’ve learned that the happiness that comes from winning is very fleeting, but the happiness that comes from just being healthy and being surrounded by people I love, doing what I love, that’s the good stuff.”
