You can practice to be more perfect and optimize your performance, but from day to day and during the day, you will be very variable. Your body, mind, and emotions are always variable. The lies, bounces, wind, and other external factors are always variable. You will keep hitting shots that sometimes are great, and very often are good, good enough, and not so good. If you notice that being a perfectionist gets in your way when playing, you’re not alone. Many golfers strive for perfect swings, perfect decisions, and perfect results – and yet, this pursuit often causes frustration, tightness, or fear of failure. Both of us are “recovering perfectionists” and we have learned that with good management, it can be an asset! If you have any tendency of expecting perfection in golf, be aware! If not managed well, you might be very competent but with no confidence and lose your joy of playing. It becomes easy to be overly critical of shots and have more memories of bad shots than good shots. For some, the self-talk becomes less than stellar and affects your confidence. Here’s a VISION54 approach to shift your experience from perfection to possibility.
